Flying With Firearms — A Sort-of How-To
First off, the title is a bit misleading. If you didn’t know, basically Tannerite®, Outlaw X targets, oxidizers, etc. — as much as I’d like to take it along for fun on hunting trips, it’s a no-go if you’re flying. Same reason we can’t ship to Alaska or Hawaii.
Now handguns and rifles, not a problem. They need to be in a locked case, obviously unloaded, with the ammunition in its original factory container or packaging. TSA will have you check it of course, unlock the case for inspection of the items, and have you lock it back before sending it down the conveyor.
I’ve had this go both ways. Sometimes they actually come out onto the luggage carousel! Other times they hold them for you at the office for pickup. I don’t know the rhyme or reason, just telling you my experience. Pistols in particular seem to find their way out with the regular luggage more often than not. Perhaps it’s a size thing? No idea.
But if it’s your first hunting trip abroad, no need to worry — just check the rules beforehand.
Disclaimer: This is of course a guideline and not in any way to be taken as legal advice. But hopefully it will ease your mind a little before you jump on that plane.
As always, happy shooting.
