Just How Much Tannerite® or Outlaw X Exploding Target Mix Can I Legally Shoot at One Time?
This is a very dicey question. First off, you need to understand I am not an attorney, and this is not legal advice or intended to be in any way, shape, form or fashion. It’s your responsibility to understand and know your own local laws and adhere to federal ones as well.
Since I have made that very clear, this is a general guideline (not to be interpreted as legal advice) in regards to how much Tannerite® or Outlaw X target mix you can shoot at once.
Federally, the ATF really doesn’t give a specific amount. The Tannerite® website, and Outlaw X as well, recommend shooting no more than 1lb at a time and being 100 yards away per pound.
But LEGALLY? This is a free country, and as long as you adhere to local and federal law, you can shoot enough to make a really, really big boom. I’m simply not going to give you a set amount — once again, for legal reasons.
Just remember a few things. If you have close neighbors and you shoot a target large enough to shake pictures off the wall, bust out windows or crack sheet rock, you could find yourself being sued in court.
One more note: Tannerite® and Outlaw X targets ARE ILLEGAL on all Federal land! Don’t shoot it there.
But let’s say you have a nice large piece of property, no close neighbors — or at least some that are pretty cool because you let them know as a courtesy what you’re doing. You can rock some nice size targets and have a whole lot of fun. If you’re planning a really big one, it’s not a bad idea to even notify your local sheriff’s department.
Under the right conditions, I have had people tell me they have heard reports as far away as 12 miles. So noise will carry.
Point being: do your own research, make certain it’s legal where you’re at, be safe and be courteous. We all want to be able to shoot our exploding targets for a very long time. The absolute quickest way to get Tannerite® and Outlaw X targets banned is to abuse them in such a way that it bothers other people. A little responsibility goes a long way.
